In most Australian states, portable electrical appliances used safely cannot be banned outright by landlords. A dehumidifier plugged into a power point is your right as a tenant, like any other appliance.

If mould results from a structural defect (leaking roof, poor ventilation, rising damp), it’s the landlord’s responsibility. Mould from tenant behaviour (e.g. not opening windows) may fall on the tenant. Document everything.

For apartments under 50m², a 10–12L/day capacity dehumidifier is typically sufficient. For larger open-plan spaces, a 16–20L/day model is recommended, especially in Queensland or coastal NSW.

Yes particularly for renters with allergies, asthma, or mould issues. A HEPA purifier can remove 99.97% of airborne particles including mould spores, which dehumidifiers alone don’t capture.
