A rough rule: 10–12L/day for a single damp room, 20–25L/day for larger homes or severe dampness. Our buying guides factor in room size, climate and the specific problem to give exact recommendations.

For most of Australia (QLD, NSW, VIC summers), a compressor is more efficient and cheaper to run. Desiccants are better for year-round use in cold climates like Tasmania or alpine areas.

A dehumidifier prevents mould by keeping humidity below 50–55%, which starves mould of the moisture it needs to grow. It won’t remove existing mould — that needs cleaning first — but it stops it coming back.

In the centre of the room is ideal. Keep it at least 30cm from walls for good airflow. In a multi-storey home, prioritise lower floors as moisture rises. Close doors and windows for best results.

It depends on how damp your space is. In very humid conditions, a 2L tank can fill in a few hours. Most units have an auto-shutoff. Running a continuous drain hose to a sink eliminates the need to empty manually.
